It is the perfect storm of struggle for Instagram creators who want to grow their accounts:
- The Instagram feed is no longer chronological. So you have to rely on engagement to ensure people see your posts.
- The controversial follow/unfollow method is dead. Everyone knows about it and can see right through your tricks now. Even the newest Instagram users have downloaded apps like Followers+ to tell who has unfollowed them. Guess what, those people will unfollow you right back if you try to follow/unfollow them.
- Instagram is cracking down on bots and eliminating their accounts in droves. So if you buy followers, chances are Instagram will soon eliminate all those accounts and you’ll be out money and back where you started.
You absolutely can grow on Instagram! The thing is, you have to do it the right way. Sorry, but the method of the past, (follow/unfollow and buying followers and likes) are ancient story. You now have to work really hard for each and every new follower. Here are some tips to grow your following without resorting to bad methods that will hurt your account in the long run.
Don’t act like a robot…
There was a time, before Instagram banned them, that thousands of Instagram users were using bots to automate all of their behavior and interaction on the platform. For that reason, Instagram is now very sensitive to behavior that is bot-like. For example, if you post at the exact same time every day or if you follow 20 new people every hour, Instagram will not reward you for that behavior. It is obvious that you are not using the platform organically.
Instead, keep your behavior random. You do not need to post at the same time each day. In fact, you don’t even have to post every day if you don’t want to! You do you, beautiful creator!
Also, engage normally. Just like and comment on pictures when you are on the app. There is no need to get on Instagram every hour and follow people. That behavior will ultimately hurt your account because Instagram might mistake you for a bot!
Use Insta Stories…
Instagram stories is a great way to get people to engage with your account. The more engagement you get, the higher your images appear in the timeline! Instagram stories auto-play, so if you post compelling videos people will watch it as they are scrolling through their stories. Also, be sure to tag your location in your story so you appear on the local stories features on the discover page!
Change up your hashtags…
This goes back to non-bot-like behavior. Don’t use the same hashtags on every post. Change things and to increase your visibility to new audiences. Also, whenever you use a new hashtag be sure to take a few minute to engage with the other pictures on that hashtag.
Follow accounts you like…
Do not follow accounts just to unfollow them later. In fact, if your account already has over 5k followers, people will be skeptical when you follow them anyway because so many large accounts do follow/unfollow. To increase the likelihood of a follow-back only follow people you intend to follow indefinitely.
Focus on engagement instead of followers
Instead of stressing about having the most followers, make sure your engagement numbers are in a good place. Do you have plenty of likes and meaningful comments on your pictures? It’s a huge red flag to potential collaborators if you have a lot of followers and your engagement is lacking.
