Tajikistan is a country in Central Asia surrounded by Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It’s known for rugged mountains, popular for hiking and climbing. The Fann Mountains, near the national capital Dushanbe, have snow-capped peaks that rise over 5,000 meters. The range encompasses the Iskanderkulsky Nature Refuge, a notable bird habitat named for Iskanderkul, a turquoise lake formed by glaciers.
Tajikistan is a safe country, though some factional fighting spilling over from nearby Afghanistan (as well as local warlordism) still occurs in Tajikistan. Visitors should keep abreast of the security situation and not take any unnecessary risks.
Tajik is the official language and is spoken by most people in Tajikistan. A member of the southwest group of Iranian languages, it is closely related to the mutually intelligible dialects of Farsi and Dari in Iran and Afghanistan, respectively, though it differs from these…
Tajikistan is a predominantly Muslim nation, so many of the national Tajikistan holidays and regional festivals are related to events in the religious lunar calendar. Most Tajiks take part in the celebrations at the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Celebrations usually feature music and food, with communities coming together to rejoice. Regional festivals, such as the colorful spring Tulip Festival (Sayri Guli Lola), are a good way for visitors to get a better insight into the traditions and culture of this fascinating land.
Best time to go:
If you’re heading over the Pamir Highway, the best time to visit Tajikistan is from late May until late September; you’re going over very high mountain passes, so outside of that period it’s potentially snowbound and inaccessible. Hot and sunny July is peak time to head for the mountains, while down in Dushambe it’s stiflingly hot. If you’re going to combine mountain trekking with some culture in the cities below then late April to May is spot on – it’s colder at night as you climb higher, but it won’t be like a furnace on the ground making museums a much more comfortable experience.
Backpacking Tajikistan is not as cheap as in the rest of central asia. Transport costs do add up, especially if you need to hire a private car. Expect to pay between 20 and 30 us dollars per day excluding transport. Meal: less than 5 dollars if you stick to roadside restaurants or the bazaar, around 6 – 8 dollars if you go to a more midrange restaurant. – Transport: between 5 and 30 us dollars depending on the distance – Accommodation: less than 10 dollars for a bed in a dormitory, around 20 dollars for a double private room.

Books worth reading while in Tajikistan
1- Beyond the Oxus – Monica Whitlock
Along the banks of the river once called Oxus lie the heartlands of Central Asia: Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Catapulted into the news by events in Afghanistan, just across the water, these strategically important, intriguing and beautiful countries remain almost completely unknown to the outside world. One diligent seminary student in the holy city of Bukhara was exiled to Siberia as a shepherd in the 1917 revolution and then conscripted into the Red Army.
2- With Our Own Hands
Winner of the 2016 Best Cookbook of the Year award at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards
This book tells the story of the Afghan and Tajik Pamir Mountains, the old traditions and rapid changes in people’s lives and the way they interact with the landscape. It is also a book about the origins of food. In the mountainous cradle of one of the world’s least known and most isolated civilizations, many of the foods that are found on Western fields and dinner tables are cultivated and invented in an enduring quest for survival.
“This erudite, absorbing volume chronicles the travels of musicologist Theodore Levin through urban and rural Transoxania… He writes in evocative, imaginative, personalized prose that vividly captures the flavor of his everyday experiences, providing plush visual detail, trenchant character profiles, attention to perplexing local hospitality codes and the shaping hand of gender, throughout.”
